Have you been lusting over the beautifully hand-addressed envelopes all over Pinterest but thought it was beyond your own talents (or your budget)? Well the great thing about Modern Calligraphy is that it flaunts the rules of it’s traditional counterpart – all different styles of handwriting are perfectly acceptable and made more beautiful by implementing this simple technique. All you require as a starting point is joined up cursive letters.
Furthermore for the ‘cheats’ version you don’t really need any particularly special materials. Either a simple gel pen will suffice or sketch pens are a good choice because you can buy different nib thicknesses – ideally you want one fine and one thick. Once you have mastered this technique you may choose to move on to ink and a proper dip pen, but while you are learning it is quite handy to avoid the added messiness of ink!
For the purpose of this guide I have chosen to handwrite just the guests names and utilised the new address labels which can be designed to match all my stationery ranges. In this way you can achieve a personalised effect but save yourself the time it would take to write out each entire address.
Let us begin…
- Using your fine pen write the names of your guests in your best, swirly joined up writing. Beginning and ending with a little flourish is a nice touch and I would aim to make my capitals letters slightly bigger than the lower case letters.
- Next, again with your fine pen, you want to thicken up each downstroke. A downstroke is when your pen goes down the page. Try and keep the thickness the same for each stroke (I struggled a little with this!) tapering where your additional stroke meets a curve.
- Finally, using both your thick and fine pens, fill in the downstrokes. You will find the fine pen is more useful for the tapered ends. I also handwrote the initials of the bride and groom to the back of the envelope as an added personal touch.
And there you have it! The final and finishing touch to your beautiful stationery. Time to get them in the post and breathe a giant sigh of relief 🙂
